We can all agree upon the value of instilling in children a commitment to and appreciation for strong dental health practices. Where opinions can diverge is on when exactly a child should make their first trip to the dentist.
Ask around, and you’ll hear a range of opinions. In the opinion of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child’s first visit to the dentist should coincide with their first birthday or six months after the eruption of their first tooth, whichever comes first. We’re inclined to agree.
As important as that first dental appointment is, we’re going a step further today and identifying two other developmental stages, ages of 4 and 7, at which it’s similarly vital that a child see the dentist.
Why Should Kids See the Dentist at Age 1?
One year of age may seem a bit young for a trip to the dentist. However, this first visit can be foundational to a child’s long-term dental health, as it provides an opportunity to begin assessing their baby teeth and gum and jawbone development, addressing matters like teething and thumb-sucking, and educating parents on properly caring for an infant’s dental health.
Why Should Kids See the Dentist at Age 4?
According to the American Dental Association, children are susceptible to cavities when they have teeth. Any at all! The ADA says that over a third of kids ages 2–5 get cavities in their baby teeth. This can cause problems with eating, speaking, and sleeping, and frankly, can be pretty painful when advanced.
Age 4 is also an appropriate point at which to definitively address bad habits like thumb-sucking and begin instilling an understanding of the habits that make up a good dental care routine, as well as a positive impression of the dentist.
Why Should Kids See the Dentist at Age 7?
Age 7, once a child’s first molars have erupted and they’ve got a mix of baby and permanent teeth, is another vital time to visit the dentist. This not only offers excellent preventative value, allowing the dentist to assess tooth, gum, and jawbone development, but it also provides an opportunity for an orthodontal exam to identify any potential alignment or bite problems.
Also, this, once again, is a chance to reinforce the importance of good oral care habits and regular trips to the dentist!
